Hi Jeff, I just wanted to quickly comment to your statement about how dependent our society is on computers and technology. And all I really wanted to say is I agree with you. It is remarkable how dependent our society is on computers, it is also scary to think about what may happen to our society if we were to ever lose the power of computers. I mean, I do not even know how I would function today with my laptop, my cell phone, or my 40" plasma television.
What is even more interesting to think about is that it is not just our U.S. society, but the entire world that is dependent on computers and technology. Japan for example, a very small country, but one of the most technologically advanced societies in the world. A country so small, but so vast with people and industry. Computers are so necessary that most societies would be hard pressed to survive without them. I cannot imagine the big businesses and corporations of today functioning simply through paper mail.
As a Marketing major I too am interested in technology and using it to promote information, products, etc. to the world. I think that we as a society will only encourage technology to get better and better. Perhaps one day soon, the IPhone will be able to have a video chat application like WebCams on laptops.

Interesting topic to bring up. Two things came to mind when I read this. First, my own personal dependence on my laptop as a student (I'm sitting on my laptop not listening to my teacher so I can write this). But also the idea that the success of many of the most influential businesses in the world relies on the functioning of a few executives' high tech smart phones and a broad 3G network.
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing to me how quickly our society adapts to technology. When I sit and think about the difference between now and when I was in elementary school it is staggering. In the grand scheme of things the time is really quite short, only about 12 years since then, but so much has happened. If you would have told me then that one day I would have 4 computers and three of them I was able to carry around with me I would have never thought it could be true. It has taken hundreds of years for technology to progress to the point it is as today, so the changes that have been made in the last 15 years are astronomical in comparison.
