Language Then and Now

Language was spoken for the first time about 100,000 years ago. After that, it took about 90,000 more years until it was actually written down. It is amazing to think that people had to come up with how to represent what they were feeling with symbols. Now a days, we take our ability to speak and write for granted. We have just always been able to do it, so we never really question it. What the first actual written language is, is still being debated. It is believed that it was the Egyptians or the Sumerians, but which one came first, no one is sure. Some believe that the Sumerians copied the Egyptians.
So what does this have to do with computer language? All language came from somewhere, so of course all language is connected. These fist writings really set the way language is written into motion. I believe that language would have been written down eventually, but the Egyptians and the Sumerians really set the pace. Because of these first writings, we were able to come up with all of the words and symbols that are used today in society. Someone, at sometime, decided that a word was going to be spelt a certain way with certain symbols(letters). This led to how we write things the way we do today.
Now in computers, language is very important. It is how the computer is able to function and do everything that we want it to do. They use programming language to create programs and help with other functions of the computer. In order to get this to work, the use of semantics and syntax are needed. In class, it was said that, "programmers must understand the syntax to get the right semantics." This is very important for this to occur in order to get the program that you want. Language has come a long way since the first one was created. Language is all around us, and it has really made an impact on how we live our lives.
