7th blog

One of the big topics in class that we discussed was security. Security is needed in many ways online. Some of which are by firewalls, difficult passwords, and special codes that only humans can type into the correct box. Remember not to write down your passwords ever, at all, for any reason. Passwords are very important to us all for many reasons.
The other day I was at McDonald's and they had the news on one of the big flat screen TV's. I glanced at it and only reason it caught my attention was the blue F for Facebook, lol. Normally I don't watch news. So i looked it up later online, and I find out that a son is taking a nosy mother to court. She went into her sons Facebook and read his posts and didn't like that at all. So she changed the Facebook password, and the e-mail address password so he could not get back into it by any means. The mother is also accused of posting on his page herself, slander and personal facts about that son's life. The 16 year old son is filing harassment charges and the prosecutors sided with him on this case. She plans to fight the charges saying if the suit is successful it will be "open season" on all vigilant parents who seek to keep their children in line.

This is something I always worried about with my grandma or my father. Why no matter what age you are dose you family seem to think they have a right to view all your social network website pages? It's invasion of privacy, and it's harassment in my opinion. That's why only my aunt knows my password and she forgets them easily, but even then I change some of them now and then.

Anna's 9th post

I wasn't surprised to see the intense amount of security Las Vegas has in its casinos. It reminded me of the movie Ocean's 11, because that movie covers a lot of the security measures in casinos. The article "What Sin City can teach the Department of Homeland Security" went over these measures, why they're necessary and how they work. I'm not sure that using these methods would have prevented the tragedy on September 11, but they definitely would have provided helpful data about the situation.

The article poses the question, "Is it ethical for casinos to gather so much information?" I think it is ethical as long as the customers are aware. I don't think it is fair to monitor someone's phone calls during their stay at the hotel if the person doesn't know about it. I think it should become common knowledge that you consent to sharing personal information when you enter the casino. I would feel violated if I found out my license plate number, phone calls and facial features were not just recorded but being shared with other casinos.

However, if the customer is aware, then I think it is completely fine to monitor their activity. It obviously works, considering Las Vegas' crime rate is so low. The people going to casinos no perfectly well that there are cheaters there, and if you aren't breaking any rules, than why would you be worried? It is hard to say it is ethical to invade someone's privacy to this extent to improve Homeland Security. Airplanes, taxes, credit cards and drivers' licenses are American necessities, it isn't fair to monitor someone just for living, these are all unavoidable. Where as if you have a problem with being watched in casinos you can avoid it by not going to them. How do you avoid being monitored by the government? You honestly can't. I understand that it would be helpful but in this case I don't think it is worth it.

Anna's 7th post

If I have learned only one thing this semester, it would be to protect my privacy. Between learning about denial of service attacks, viruses, worms, adware and spyware I have officially been scared. In class we have learned many ways to insure a safe identity.

One thing we've learned is to never write down your passwords. This seems so obvious but I didn't realize how important it was until it was emphasized in class and websites. I have a horrible memory and I always write my passwords down because if I don't I never remember and have to reset it or getting it sent to my e-mail, which is just a hassle. I've realized the hassle is worth it instead of getting my credit card information, bank statements or e-mail hacked. We also learned what constitutes a safe password, such as making it at least 6 characters, using upper and lowercase and both numbers and letters.

I once saw a TV show where a wife spied on her husband by tracing his keystrokes to track his e-mails. I thought this was so unrealistic until we learned in class that there actually is spyware to trace that. Then, when I was filling out my FAFSA information, I saw a real life application. Instead of typing in my social security number, the website offered a keyboard on the screen that allowed the mouse to click on the numbers so keystrokes couldn't be traced.

Internet Security

Internet security involves the protection for a computer's online account and files from intrusion of a different administrator. Security measures include protection by selected passwords, change of file permissions and back up of a computer's data.
Security concerns are in some ways minor to normal business working, but serve to accentuate how important it is that business users feel confident when using these various systems. Security will always be most important when it comes to agenda; simply because cyber criminals know that a successful attack can be very rewarding. This means they will always strive to find new ways to avoid security, plus users will consequently need to be continually cautious. Whenever decisions need to be made about how to increase a system, security will need to be held highest among its requirements.
In 1987, the ‘Vienna’ virus was the first virus to emerge. By taking immediate action the virus was handled and destroyed. We now have various other viruses scanning everyone with internet access in the world. Threats such as the Bropia Worm, WANK/OILZ worm and the creeper virus are just some of the technically problems researchers have determined to be huge.
Non-profitable organizations like CIS help other organizations reduce the risk of online disruptions resulting from failing technical security controls. CIS provides enterprises with the best practice standards for security agreement as well as resources for measuring information for security needs and making crucial decisions about security profits.

It is also important for you to exercise some caution and use social networking securely.

Internet security can be achieved through use of antivirus software, which removes envious software programs. Firewalls are other option that will determine which particular websites can be viewed and block deleterious content.
