Aristotle

Welcome! This week blog is not about the author of the blog, but it is more about the topic of the blog.

Aristotle is known to be a philosopher of many things, such as mathematics, physics, biology, metaphysics, botany, medicine, theater, dance, politics, and agriculture. However, the one that I am going to focus on is the one thing that I didn't mention, which is logic.

The great philosopher, Aristotle, was known to be the father of logic. He explained why things were the way they were, and developed the first formalized system for reasoning according to IEP (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). I know some might be thinking what is the meaning of the term logic. Well in the last class period of IS 215 the term was define as the art of non-contradictory identification. Also, it was learned that Aristotle was invented the three laws of logic, which is the law of identity: whatever is, is; the law of non-contradiction: nothing can both be and not be; and the law of excluded middle: everything most either be or not be.

Ancient Spice Trade

In ancient times, the spice trade was as much responsible for goods, as it was for the spread of languages and calculations. People would have first had to come up with a way to communicate with people of different countries. This would usually be done by symbols and expressions. Then, they would have to come to a way of calculating the value of goods being traded. I would believe that the people trading animals and furs(coats), would put a higher a higher value on their goods than the spice traders.

A good source, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spice_trade , can further demonstrate the routes, and difficult terrain that these original traders(explorers) had to endure. I am sure many people died during these extreme undertakings. It wasn't until shipping came along, that the trade business and the expansion of languages made the world a much smaller place. These people were the real pioneers of language and calculations.

Among these original explorers was Vasco da Gama. He brought shipping to China, India, Egypt, and to the Romans. He was responsible for the original maritime routes for trade around the Cape of Good Hope. Vasco da Gama lived from approx. 1460-1524, they are not sure if he was born in 1460, or 1469. Born in Portugal, he was probably most responsible for spreading Portugese all around the world.

Explorer da Gama then crossed the Atlantic Ocean to take the spice trade, along with the animal trade, to South America(Brazil). Once again, he had to communicate, so hence, the spread of Portugese makes it to another continent. As the spread of trade expanded, so did the arts of language and calculations. These original explorers did as much for trade, as they did for our conversion to a uniform language and calculations.
