As I sit here typing at the last possible second, I'm simultaneously trying to find something interesting to write about, and looking out of the corner of my eye to see if the Fedex truck is here yet. I'm waiting on my new mobile phone to arrive. Some might call it an obsession, but gadget lust is a way of life for me. Its the new Google phone; the Nexus One. Google calls it a "super phone", but most of us what probably prefer to leave it in the established realm of smartphone.
From what I've read, this little thing is pretty amazing. It has been interesting to study the history of the computer while simultaneously researching a tiny computer that I'll be carrying with me everywhere. Based on clock speed alone, the processor in this phone, at 1 GHz, is significantly more powerful than the first desktop computer my family had. Significantly more powerful. It makes me think back to the days of our first home computers in the late 80's early 90's. Pre-internet, at least commercial internet, pre-cellphone, pre-netbook, pre-navigation. And it wasn't that long ago!
Moving forward, I can only imagine what I'll be carrying around ten years from now. Ten years ago I got my first cellphone, a giant Nokia. It made calls, and that's it. With the exponential growth of technology and processing capabilities, I look forward to the new sources of technological wonder that will continue to fuel my gadget lust well into the 21st century.
It is really amazing how technology is improving everyday. I could remember when cell phones really didn't have many features.
ReplyDeleteSmart phones are very cool, and I definitely agree they are pretty addicting. I've never owned one myself, but I do own a busted up iPod touch, which works with the same technology as the iphone. The interface is amazing, and it never fails. I feel lately as if all this awesome technology is driving us farther apart. Back in the 19th century, the only way to communicate was to hop on a horse or walk to a destination and physically talk to somebody. Now we all use networking sites to talk to people across the world, but with this luxury, most people don't even feel like they need to ever physically see this person ever again, they can just rely on their robot box to do the work for them. I'm not trying to talk down technology, but this seems to be the groove that everybody's falling in lately.
ReplyDeleteThe advancement of phones is so amazing. The first cell phone I remember was on the tv show Fresh Prince of Bel Air. It was bigger than the house phone we had at that time. It seems like cell phones became smaller and smaller, but over time they are getting bigger. The technological capacity has increased quite significantly as well. I remember also when all cell phones did was call out and recieve calls but now we can basically run our life from our cellular device.
ReplyDeleteI can relate, I have a cell phone thst does almost everything. I still have my first cell phone and its about as heavy as my laptop. All I could do on it call our and receive calls. No call-waiting, no texting, and no voice mail. And at the time I thought technology couldnt get any better.
ReplyDeleteWith the cell phones we have now with the internet, texting, e-mail, cameras, and voice mail.....what else is there? In ten years what else is going to be standard on a cell phone?
I got my first "smart phone" last year and I really like it better then the old p.o.s. i had. I like that i can use it as a music storage and I've even put movies on it. when I first got it it came with free 6 months of t.v. service and that was really nice.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is very different now a days, it bring out the life out in everyone with the many different features it has. Cell phones started off with no type of features when they first were developed but now a phone is a personal computer we all should have one a smartphone that is. I know for a fact that it will help us all to the best of its possibilities.
