Well, last class we talked a little about digital marketing. I'd like to give my viewpoint on the subject. Four those of us that need a general idea of what digital marketing is, it would be classified as a company promoting its name or product using the internet and even on our mobile devices. Even though most people would think that this technique of marketing would require use of the internet, it in fact does not. What companies do is they advertise on digital banner ads and, again, our mobile devices. Now there are two ways to go about this - pull and push. Pull marketing is where the user (or customer) has to actually go out and find (or pull) the content that they are seeking. I wish all marketing was like this, where you're not being hassled into buying goods or products. The other way to market digitally is the push method. It's exactly as it sounds: a company is trying to sell YOU individually a good or service. It involves both the company and the customer. It is usually in the form of an e-mail, text message, etc. I guess I'm a little biased; I hate advertising and marketing all together. It's the reason I don't watch television. I can't stand having a commercial break every 10 minutes; call me crazy. I also don't like it when somebody is trying to sell me something. I'm smart enough to make my own decisions, so don't try to get me to buy it. We live in a world of intense advertising still, and I'll just have to live with it. I do like webtrends business model for digital marketing, though. Even though I don't like advertising, their model represents new thinking about it. It's a great way to assess how your company is maturing. We'll see what the future holds for this industry.

I also do not care for the bombardment of ads i see on tv, on my computer, on the radio, or any other possible source they have managed to infiltrate. Although it is annoying, don't you think it is becoming more and more necessary for companies to do that? I feel as though people's attention spans are becoming shorter and shorter with each day. Also, with all of the products out there, companies want to make sure that consumers are aware that their products exist so they can make the decision to buy them or not. If people don't know about it, then they will go with something they do know. As far as I know, advertising is the only way to get this done and digital marketing is just companies realizing the amount of time people spend on their computers and phones and going after their business.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a problem with commercials, but they have gotten control over the years. It seems that we have just as much commercial time as we have television time. The marketing technique that grinds my gears is email blast. Every morning that I wake up I have at least 20 new emails from retailers and companies that want me to buy their products. I don't even know how they got my email! I don't hate Marketing but I definitely wish it would calm down a little, although I don't ever see it happening.
ReplyDeleteWell stated, Jimmy. Don't forget to include three paragraphs.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about all of the advertising on TV and people trying to get you to buy something. If you want something or are looking for a certain product, you can go out and ask questions to find exactly what you need. I don't like being hassled with so many commercials and any where you go, theres advertising. I still watch TV and deal with the commercials and thats all you can do, and advertising on the internet has grown tremendously but its just something were going to have to deal with in todays world.
ReplyDeleteThe business of marketing is very complex and it requires a lot of diffrent stratiges. Some of these are more enjoyanle then others. The name of the game is being reconized. Some try to annoy you so much that you'll never be able to get their name out of your head. To me this seems like the lazy way out. Most of this kind of marketing is done in mass so there is little work involved and it shows. I think that Hulu has got a good thing going with there limited comercial breaks. I Hope the future of advertising doesn't sway the way of annoying mass spam
ReplyDeleteI am a marketing major, and i must say that without marketing many people would fail to find the products they want, as quickly as they'dn like, or at the price they'd like. That said i do agree that it has gotten out of control over the years, but as gloablization grows ever more prevalent there is more competition, so business are constantly trying to advertise in new areas, my biggest pet peeve: commercials at the theatre!
