One of the topics we covered in class was Language. When I first saw this, I thought "Oh no, I'm taking English and Spanish. I don't need anymore language in my life." It's not what I expected though. The reason we were going to cover language in IS was to understand more about computer programs/data and to store information in a more meaningful way.

Something that caught my attention was the fact that the first 'spoken' language was developed over 100,000 years ago. That's a long time, and the fact that written was only developed 5,ooo years ago shows how big of a gap there was from us talking to writing. Living in the world that we do today, everything we do is centered around writing...EVERYTHING!

I think as modern day humans, we take language for granted. There is so much rich history behind something that we do so often. I myself never really knew what syntax and semantics really meant. I was so uninformed that I thought written language came shortly after spoken language. Everyday we just talk and write and most of us don't even have a good understanding of how our vast language even came to be.

  1. That is amazing to think that humans went without a written language for over 95,000 years! I have always felt that technology changes and evolves so quickly, but looking at something like language, in the grand scheme of things, maybe it really doesn't. I wonder what people will look back on 100,000 years from now and see as the biggest change to our society is...

  2. Language is taken for granted today. I'm not just talking about the language of humans, but I am talking about the language of computers as well. Programming language actually came before the invention of computers (similar to how spoken language came before written language). Now, we use computers so much that we easily forget that there was a life without them. Even though we may not understand programming language, we use language every day that share similarities. For instance, in our spoken language we use syntax (for constructing sentences) and semantics (the meaning), just like programming language.

  3. I have a hard time with computers, I can't imagine the ability a person has to have to decode some of these languages and symbols.

  4. what amazes me is that computer language changes frequently. computers 20 years ago were alot harder to use and understand than it is now. Computers today are alot more forgiving, like a stick shift car, haha. when I say more forgiving I mean by the use of computer and its language is alot easier now.

  5. It's amazing how much communication has innovated. You have a great picture for your topic. It really emphasizes the fact how we was people used to communicate. It's interesting to know where our language originated from. You should find more information.

  6. It's so interesting! Although people can't understand all of the characters, the curiosity keeps us exploring the secret.I hope I can understand them.
