Food for Thought
Coming into this class I wasn't that excited about learning about computers. I thought, what is there to it? Well, after two classes it would appear that there is a lot to know! I am not a very technologically savvy person to say the least. I really enjoyed learning about a brief history of computers. There are so many events in this history that are hard for me to imagine. I mean, think about it, the actual thought of thinking of a computer. This piece of the puzzle really is part of the larger picture. Advancements in society have been happening since the Stone Age but this leap wasn't on the same level. Thinking about this, it would seem that the light bulb really was the beginning to it all. Why wasn't a candle good enough? And then we moved on to kerosene (probably shortening up the whole process a bit). Introducing electricity was a major step.
It is crazy to imagine that a loom really brought the whole process of programming into existence or at least helped it a long quite a bit. I don't even know what a programmed loom would look like. I have so many questions about the process of programming. How did they create a machine that would understand how to read the programming equipment? I know that they used paper and film in the earlier days, wouldn't it rip? I guess that it all comes down to the shocking fact that you can program a large inanimate object to be refined and graceful. We have come a long way that is for sure. From the old style programming to the perfected programming of surgical instruments. It is mind boggling that is for sure!
I don't know a lot of the programming jargon but learning a little about the history of it seems pretty cool. Who would have thought that a computer got its name from a person who would compute things. Or even that an operating system came from the people who would operate the machine in the old days. I am glad that we can always trace our roots back to a time that wasn't so complex. It makes new situations seem a little less daunting. :)
This is my favorite picture from class so far, they have come a long way!

Hi KathIeen, I strongly agree your opinion. The developing of computer has a long way to go. I can see the change of it. The programming of computer is changing the world. Even though we don’t know how it changes, we just need to share the result it brings to us.When a new computer is produced, we need to receive new knowledge. Sometimes, I am confused that whether the high speed of developing computer is a real good thing.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it is interesting and I like that picture too. A wooden computer....Im sure if Dell or Apple put out a wood grain laptop and put a high price tag on it, it would sell.
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely amazing how far we have come since those early days of computing. I can't wait to see where we will be even in the next 10 years. Technology seems to be changing at an ever accelerating pace!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that is insane that the idea of production started from a loom. But I guess the places these things start is where they are needed most. If you think about it the need for clothing production then was quite similair to our need for instant communication now. They are both high priorities to each society so it makes sense that the focus of these two societies is to facilitate this.
