Networks and Our Future
We discussed the advancement of networks this week in class in business and technological contexts. There was the interesting phenomenon which was the barrier to companies competing to create better internet services. This was because the government required companies to lease their lines for free. What happened thereafter was that smaller service providers would rent the lines for free and capitalized on a flaw that let them use others' capital they otherwise would have had to pay for.
This was why cable beat out DSL. Cable operated on a different system and closed this loophole. The internet soon was affordable and accessible for all :)
So where does it all go from here? Our networks will have to expand rapidly in order to facilitate the increased amount of data that we'll have. The next big development is fiber-optic communication. This form of communication uses light as a medium through which data may be transferred. Fiber-optics may also be used to have better telephone and cable TV connections. This development is expected to occur in just a few years.

There is one thing I absolutely HATE about cable internet. That is that the speed of which it operates all depends on how many people are on at a time. So when I'm trying to use the internet during peak hours of the day (pretty much all evening) it works sluggishly slow. But hey, what are ya gonna do?
