NASA and Technology

NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has played an integral part in the world of computers and informations systems. Many people have witnessed a shuttle launch, but many do not realize all of the technological advances we have achieved through the space program. Over the last 40 years, it would take too long to mention all of the experiments in space that have lead to advances in our ability to perform calculations and process information.

GM has partnered with NASA to improve robotic technology. We have learned in class that when we are talking about robots, we are talking about information systems. NASA's value in technology has been in its ability to test objects and theories under the conditions of weightlessness. Many of the experiments performed have helped GM build safer cars and plants.

Today, Congress is meeting in committees to discuss cutting NASA's budget for the upcoming years. In addition to costing many people their jobs, this will also reduce many of the missions to space. Reducing missions to space will have a huge impact on the new technology. These budget cuts will affect our quality of life.

  1. I don't like how Congress keeps cutting the NASA budget. They deserve every cent they get. I recently attended a seminar presented by Dr. Greg Pinnell, who is part of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Aeromedical Advisory Council. He is also a supporter of the Space Shuttle program through the Department of Defense-Human Space Flight Support Office. In his presentation, he showed us his missions of space shuttle rescue operations.

I recently just found out that NASA has decided to stop using the space shuttle and go back to rockets, such as the ones used in Apollo missions, like the Saturn V and Saturn IB. I think that they work better.

As for new robot technologies developed by GM, these robots present a new way of exploring space. A robot can go where men can't, and without worry if something bad happens. The partnership between GM and NASA is said to last until 2012. I'm excited to see what happens with this.

  2. The Nasa Space Program is responsible for the majority of the technology we use. Computers, cell phones, GPS systems all have one thing in common; the use of Satellites. Without Nasa we would not have the technologies that we are so reliant on today.

Nasa also plays a large role in our national security. The planes are jets Nasa uses are the same that Naval Aviators use to train on. Nasa is responsible for pioneering aeronautical technology.

The fact that the government continues to cut the Nasa budget shows how misplaced their thoughts really are. The government would rather take that money and give it to people who sit around all day expecting a welfare check. Nasa plays too much of a major role in the advances of modern technology to just keep giving it less and less funding.

  3. Yeah NASA facilitates a lot of our common used technology. Also, the Air Force works with NASA also. They definetly have to get their priorities straight. Some things are just not necessary.
