Telekinesis and robotics
Telekinesis is the art of moving and controlling objects with one's thoughts. Long thought to be never possible, it seems to be surprisingly close to reality. Very recently, a bioengineering firm in Canada unveiled it's newest and most impressive application: a system where you really can move objects with your mind. The premise is that the machine seen above on the user's head has the ability to sense alpha and beta brain waves. These brain waves are able to determine whether or not one is concentrating on a specific thought process. The machine then turns this data into a real-life application.
See it all work here
This could mean a revolution for paraplegics or quadriplegics. In class, we saw a man control the opening and closing motion of a hand through a chip that was implanted to the top of his brain. This machine discounts any surgical procedure and makes it easily accessible. Increased accessibility results in practicality. What we're seeing right now with this current development is likely to become standard practice in all of our homes after perfection and an economy of scale is attained.
Not only could this technology create opportunities for severely disabled persons to lead normal lives, but also have applications to make all of our work easier. Manufacturing and other daily, routine tasks will likely benefit most from this technology in our future.

The idea that we are going to be able to move things with our minds is unreal to me, but I know that this is coming in the future. Even after watching the youtube video, I still cannot grasp how this technology actually works. Are we always going to need something on the other end (connected to the device we are trying to move) to pick up signals generated by our mind? Or will we be able to just think about something and then with enough concentration it will happen? How long will it take before things get out of hand and this technology is used for bad instead of good? I know that people always find new ways to use technology for evil, but with technology being able to do more things it might be able to cause more destruction as well. I understand how great it is going to be for people who are disabled, but do the rest of us really need it, or are we just getting lazy?
ReplyDeleteafter I seen that video in class it got me wondering is we really going to take technology this far because if we do it is going to be hard to look back and How you feel about people be combine with technology?
ReplyDeleteIt just blows my mind that a computer would be able to sort through your thoughts to complete a command. My thoughts are scattered and I can only imagine the mixed signals I would send. I think this technology is amazing for the medical community, but I agree with the above comments; how will people abuse this technology in the future?
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that they actually have things like this out now! It doesn't even seem possible and to know that we have it available in our time is just crazy because when I think about it, it seems like it should be something that should'nt be developed until years after I'm gone. But it is a good thing that we do have this and can help people who are disabled who can control things with their mind.
