The Future of Computing

During Tuesday's class, we talked a lot about where technology is heading as far as computers go. It is amazing to go back to the beginning of the course and think about the computers that could only do simple computations and usually only one or two. Now, we can fit devices in our pockets that can tell us the weather, make phone calls, surf the internet, send and receive photos, play music, and much more.

With all of these advances in technology, computers are doing basically everything for us. They allow us to do extremely complicated computations and give us access to unlimited amounts of information all by typing in some words or numbers, not really giving much thought to what's behind that information or calculation. With all of this availability of shortcuts and quick information, soon we won't really have to do much for ourselves.

Some may argue that all of this advancing in technology is improving our lives and raising our education level by making more things available to us and with greater ease. On the other side, don't you think it is making us lazier and less motivated at the same time? Why would people want to pay attention in class when they can go home and google something and find the answer in seconds? Also, it scares me to think how much technology is NECESSARY in our daily lives. Before all of these computers and smartphones, people survived just fine. Now, since they have been introduced, I couldn't imagine living without my phone or my laptop; they are just too important. This dependency on technology is making us less self-sufficient and more reliant on computers to do what people did for hundreds of years without.

Thoughts? Concerns?

  1. In this blog I relate to the last paragraph the most. Yes technology is making people lazy and also developing technology costs money. Technology has become a norm for our society. Just about everyone has a computer and or cell phone. We are living the same way and doing the same jobs we did 100 of years ago.

  2. I totally agree with you. Technology is making people very lazy and in a way less resourceful. The fact that I can sit in once spot and do hundreds of things, that originally would have called for me to leave the house is crazy. I love technology but its really getting crazy. Our parents and grandparents lived just fine with half the things we had today. Our society is all about instant gratification; it's our money, and we need it now! (lol)

  3. You did a great job showing the pros and cons of emerging technology. It's true that computers are easier, convenient and practical, but I agree we are way too dependent on them. I get so anxious when I leave my phone at home it's unbelievable. Honestly, our parents didn't even have cell phones and they got by just fine so it really shouldn't be a big deal, but we have just grown so accustomed to having our computers.

  4. I completely agree that our society has become almost entirely dependant on modern technology. As a spoiled kid having grown up predominantly in the 21st century, it is very hard for me to imagine what it must have been like in the old days, or even 20 years ago when very few people had cell phones. I know if I call someone and they don't pick up, I start to worry that something has happened, more often than not. I can't imagine not having a line to anyone at anytime.
