Web Mashups

Put two or more web applications together and what do you get? A web-mashup!

Part of how Web 2.0 is changing the way people interact with the Internet is in the creation of web-mashups. Want to know what there is to eat in a specific area? Try Foodio54. Foodio54 provides you with a list of restaurants within a radius (that you specify), of where you would like to eat. You can even tell it what type of restaurant you are looking for and have it exclude fast-food joints if you are in more of the sit-down type mood. You also have the option of subscribing to their site, which gives you the added bonus of Foodio54 learning about your eating habits and making personalized recommendations for you!

Or, maybe you are going on a vacation, and want to know the base price of hotels in a given area, what restaurants are nearby, if there are any landmarks, even how many and the locations of the Starbucks in the area. You could give HotelMapSearch.com a try. It will show you on a Google map right where these services are located.

These are just a few of the mashups that I found while on a web-site called Webmashups.com. They have lists of sites that utilize mashup technology, based on categories such as: food, music, sports, mapping, etc.

The Internet is getting a whole lot more interactive!

  1. I enjoy the idea of a web mashup, because you can find things faster than ever before and they will look at what you want at that time all the way down to what type of food you would like to eat. this is very effiencent especially when you are traveling like you said, if you are not familiar with the area, things are way easier to find.

  2. I love the idea of mash ups. I think they come in most handy for traveling. like the one you linked. you can type in the hotel and find restraunts near by. This can be a great help and it would be even better if it could pick out restraunts that served to people with allergies. like gluten free menus avaiable, and it would only pop up those places.

  3. I agree that mashups are pretty cool. It is really interesting that ordinary people, that have the necessary knowledge, can do these. I wonder if it would end up like facebook did. That is something that I don't really understand, would you get money if you created a mashup that was really successful and had a lot of traffic? I bet if you had advertising on there you would. I guess I don't understand how facebook makes its money.

  4. Web mash-ups make searches a lot easier. I enjoy being able to search for diffent places of interest quickly and easily. In the future, this idea will be even more advanced with Web 3.0. This browser will allow you to be able to search for multiple things through just one complex sentence. It seems so easy to get information now, so it will be hard for me to believe that retrieving information is going to become even easier. Right now, web mash-ups are great, but know that in the future our searches are going to be even better.

  5. I think Web mash-ups make life so much easier. Being able to seperate what you want from everything else is so nice. I think that with the coming years, they will only get more and more popular.

  6. Web mashups are a new thing to me. I actually never heard of them until this class. This was a pretty informative post and I am going to look into mashups more in the future.
