This is an image of a robotic arm attaching itself to a human brain. This is a dramatic yet realistic example of what we as human are working towards in terms of technological advancement. Human computer interaction is what I am getting at. Rosie from the Jetsons, Arnold from the Terminator, and Sonny from I Robot all seem a little far-fetched but the fact remains that it is the kind of interaction that we one day hope to have with machines and computers.
Technology has no limits. Computers, machines, and technological methodology can always be improved one way or another. Even as I type we are creating new ways for humans to interact with the computers and technological resources around them. A couple of week ago in class the professor showed us the example of the robot made by Toyota that could play the violin. Now what is to stop Toyota from making that same robot be able to use a computer, make a pot of coffee, or check me out of the grocery store line...oh wait we've already created that. as important as technology has become to our society we cannot let it get in the way of how we live our lives.
Technology is becoming so advanced and easy, that people are suffering because of it. I know that I still have to teach my mom how to use the internet or microsoft word, yet I know she is a smart and successful woman. I feel that we will one day overstep our boundaries in terms of developing computers and technology. Human computer interaction will become human-robot interaction and soon enough it will become robot-human interaction. What I am getting at is control. Human computer interaction is great as long as we are in control, yet many times we are at the mercy of the technological devices we use every day. I mean what happened to the classic pen and paper. I had an employee miss work the other day because he couldnt check his schedule because his computer broke down!! I print out the schedule and put one in my employees mailboxes every week at the office!! No excuse.
That robotic arm is on top of the human brain for a reason...it wont be human-computer interaction much longer.
Good philosophical point, man. It looks like the future holds nothing but more and more computers. I think it would be a great career to pursue, seeing that it's still a growing industry. I've thought about robots and science fiction many a times, and the future is now. The advantages offered by robotics far outweighs its disadvantages. If we can replace a lost limb with a fully functional robotic arm, we've done our job right.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be strange if it came to the point that it is kind of like the Matrix when you wanted to learn something new they just gave you a chip and you could do it? That is what all of this makes me think.
