This week in class we looked at health care case studies and the possibilities of how we could incorporate them with information systems. There are so many possibilities that could come out of combining the two, so that it would make it easier for doctors to view our health care needs between one another, because sometimes we have to visit more than one doctor to make sure that we are getting the right treatment that is needed to help us get back into a healthy form.
Privacy is the main thing that many people worry about when it comes to health care and some information can be very sensitive in their eyes that they would only like their doctors to be able to view that sensitive information. One thing that we could do to combine Health care and information systems, is have your file available to your doctors, even if they are at two different places. Something like this would only be right if you signed some document saying that it is ok to send your history to other doctors that you will have to see. But by being able to share this information would help your doctors out tremendously because they could see what prescriptions you have taken before and what you might be on that time. This way they could look before you come in and have a good idea at how they might be able to treat you and not mix medicines that might cause you to have bad reactions.
I feel like this would be a great idea, but this is only if you are willing to allow your information to be transferred through a type of system, that would allow your multiple doctors to see what they are working with, to me its a good thing because then they would be able to treat you more effectively and more efficiently.
I think that you're right, there is a need for IS in health care systems. Doctors being able to cross reference patients and medical data would be a very useful tool. However, any tool is likely to be abused. With the kind of personal information that would be shared and transfered, there is a great risk of hacking into vital data, coupled with the risk of doctor/patient confidentiality. There is a certain degree of IS in health care today, but I'm sure that all they will focus on is taking care of people and increasing their capacity. New equipment and better workers will always be at the top of the list financially. But the more readily accessible IS technology becomes and the cheaper it gets to run, the more likely we'll see more automated health care.
ReplyDeleteI, too, agree that allowing all of your doctors to see this information would be good. I do not believe that insurance companies and potential employers have a right to this information.
ReplyDeleteIS can play such a vital role in the health care industry. Just the other day I was researching for a class project and found this new hospital system that UM is considering. The hospital beds come equipped with attached touch screen monitor that records all vital signs, previous treatments, and last nurse check up. The system also automatically alerts a nurse or doctor if the patients vitals exceed the necessary range. Along with the touch screen, all the basic patient tools are attached to the bed. No longer does a nurse have to bring a dephibulator and the patients charts; everything is bedside to create less stress and faster patient care on behalf of the nurses and doctors. IS can truly benefit the health industry in ways that most could never imagine.
ReplyDeleteI think the information system provides more convenient way for doctors to record the personal health information, because there are so many patients every day. If the doctors or nurses confound the data, the situation will be terrible. However, if the health information lack the confidentiality,it will also bring the terrible result or make the patient feel uncomfortable. It is hard to say that diffent doctors share a patient's health privacy is good or bad.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a good idea, your suggestion allows technology to facilitate visits to the doctor, hospital, etc while giving people the option to opt out by not allowing their Doctor chare the info in the first place. I think more people may favor this approach if they can actaully reap some of the benefits, reduced wating room time, reduced amount of time needed to be seen/diagnosed, lower costs, etc. Otherwise people may not want to riskputting their info out there so to speak.
