Music Industry

Looking at the entertainment industry, the music industry has drastically changed due to technology. Information systems have not only changed the way we hear music and the way we purchase it, but also how the music industry itself works. Technology has played a pivotal role in breaking down and rebuilding the music industry.

The aspect of all this that I find most interesting is how the Internet and music sharing has changed how music was once filtered by the music industry. In the past, it was the record label’s job to go out and find talent to invest money in. The company would then either make or lose money on whether or not they became successful and profited. With the Internet, it is now more often the public who chooses who record label will sign. Record executives can instead look to MySpace to see what new talent is popular and sign artists who already have a large fan base.

The Internet has thus, also created new opportunities for artists to be heard and to gain a larger audience. Where in the past a band without a label could produce a few albums to sell to local stores, they can now have them up for everyone in the world to hear. This however, also makes it more difficult for bands to be recognized, as they must compete in a sea of thousands of artists on the Internet.

  1. You are completely right! I've heard of so many musicians who were discovered on MySpace. Artists have more freedom to make the music they want because they don't have a company telling them what to do.

  2. The music industry has changed significantly in the past decade. As this article stated the days of trying to gain attention from major labels are coming to an end, with many bands going independent or simply selling their music on the internet. It also seems in many areas of the music industry the focus has moved away from selling albums to promoting the name and then making money doing live shows.
